Skinning Animals for Fur - Why Not Humans?

85

By theherbivorehippi

How do we put a price on a life?

Fur has been a social status, sign of power and money through the years so why not wear human skin? Wouldn't this be ultimate level of power. Could we put a price on the torture, killing and skinning of a human being the way society is able to put a price tag on innocent creatures?

Could you wear your dog or cat?

Could you wear someone's pet that has been stolen?

I can't imagine one human would think it would be acceptable to wear human skin as coat. I also doubt anyone would be alright with the idea of wearing their dog, cat, rabbit, whatever their family pet might be. Additionally we would not want to wear someone's pet either. It is almost impossible to know where furs come from now and the fact is that a good percentage of rabbit is in actuality dog and cat. Our favorite four legged friends are a huge market in China. Investigators have found as many of 8,000 cats and dogs crammed in cages on one truck load. They are caged, with open wounds, some dead. These animals when found had been on the road for days without food or water. The cages were stacked on top of each other and to unload, workers were simply throwing the cages to the ground, shattering bones of these animals caged together. Most still had collars on, stolen from their owners, terrified and close to death. All of them being pawned off as rabbit fur for trims of jackets, hats, boots, etc.

Fur farming is torture plain and simple. It is raising an innocent creature that feels to be killed. Maybe you don't know that a mink is a semi-aquatic animal. In the wild they spend the majority of their day swimming however they're kept in cages that are at the most 10 x 24. They are an active animal and being caged causes neurotic behavior. They have stomach ulcers from stress and bite their tails as self mutilation. These sweet animals never have the ability to swim and denying them water to cool off causes at least 10% to die from heat related disease. The mink is either gassed, poisoned or has it's neck broke. It has been proven they have been known to simply be poisoned with weed killer and their bodies convulse up to ten minutes before finally dying.

Fox farms are equally as horrible. These gorgeous animals live so cramped the farms have over 20% of foxes lost due to stress related cannibalism. Foxes are generally electrocuted for death. Chinchillas have their necks broke or are also electrocuted by hooking one clamp to their ear and one to their genitalia to fry their insides. It takes a minimum of 100 chinchilla to make one coat yet people think this is acceptable to wear.

There are no federal laws to protect millions of animals to be killed for fashion. Countries like France kill over 70 million rabbits a year. These playful sweet animals never have the chance to hop or dig in the grass so the buyer can wear a beautiful hat, yes, a beautiful hat because it was a beautiful animal. Angora rabbits don't have it any better. They are repeatedly shorn for wool by strapping them to a board while their bodies are kicking and moving causing bloody punctures to their skin over and over. These rabbits have very sensitive food pads so living on a wire cage causes them to have ulcerated feet. Males only have 80% the wool of females so they are generally killed at birth. Socially acceptable? I call this murder. What if we said male babies can't reproduce so lets kill them at birth? This would never be OK!

Perhaps you also don't know that one out of four animals that are trapped by metal claw traps escape by chewing their limb off due to their pain, only to die shortly after escape by loss of blood. Now they're dead and unused. Others die in the trap from lack of food, water or natural elements before the trapper even arrives. Additionally thousands of dogs, cats and deer are killed every year finding themselves in these traps.

Fur farmers only care about the preservation of the fur of the creature so these innocent sweet animals are killed in the most horrible ways to avoid harming the coat. How can people cherish their pets yet spend enormous amounts of money funding the torture of another animal that is equally as sweet and lovable. If society can put a price tag on animals, perhaps they should make it a requirement for the buyer to visibly see these animals, pet them, look in their eyes and watch them murdered? An animal's eyes tell a story of a lifetime. Take the time to look.

Were you aware of the domestic animal fur trade in China?

I was going to say 'Good Hub' but actually 'Horrible' is what I really mean. Well written and high impact photos. It is terrible what we humans will put animals through. I really don't know when it will ever end. Thank you. I hope more people will read this.

This is horrific, but we don't have to go off our home continent to find this type of cruelty. I posted a forum a few months back (http://hubpages.com/forum/topic/20889#post344547) regarding this video:

http://www.dailyfinance.com/2009/09/03/ … -eat-eggs/

It's not for the weak of stomach or heart. It's truly aweful. Animals are not able to speak our language, and it takes people like you to help bring these things to light. Thank you for being one of their voices.

You know you think with all the charities we have around the world, we still don't have a international charity, as far as I know, that prevents stuff like this on an international scale. This is just plain horrible. This is exactly why I don't wear any animal fur, because it's inhumane and cruel. Something needs to be done about this.

This is exactly why I'll never consider hunting or fishing a sport too, as all they do is glorify animal cruelty. I could understand hunting an animal for food and clothes, but with today's technology, I don't even believe hunting animals for clothes is even necessary. that's just plain wrong. If you ask me, I think someone should start a charity campaign to stop this.

Beth100- I went to your thread.....ughhhh! yes, I've seen that video. It is heart wrenching. I would personally rather see a human chopped up than an animal hurt. Animals are so innocent and helpless. If I could buy an entire island and rescue every animal to live on it! It's a nice dream! Thanks for reading!

Stevennix2001-I know! I cannot believe with how many great organizations like ASPCA and Peta and the wonderful petition sites like care2.com that animals are still being harmed like this. There is a lot of petitions to try to stop animals being hunted for fur or for entertainment purposes but getting laws passed and enforced seems to be impossible. I am a Vegan...so obviously I don't believe in any animals being used for clothing and it is completely unnecessary. We have enough man made wonderful materials available to us that this is just not needed! Hopefully one day more people will see things the way we do. All we can do for now is try to keep making people more aware. Thanks so much for reading and sharing your thoughts.

Brutal but the truth! How about this - you want to wear fur - then you trap the animal in the wild, you skin it, and you make the fur coat. Not going to happen - we are going to walk into a store and buy it - making us the guilty culprit. We have to do better. I feel we were put on this earth to take care of our sister and brother animals and the environment - we have failed miserably.

I know! It is so sad. My heart just breaks thinking about how animals are treated, tortured and killed. I swear, sometimes I just break into tears for no reason! Thanks for reading!

Don't forget cotton, the most pesticided product on earth. Between the insects and the birds and rodents unlucky enough to be there when the crop is dusted, there's a lot of death. Literally millions of lives -- probably hundreds of lives lost to make a tee shirt.

Also there's no silk without killing the worms.

Ever seen a sheep stand still to be sheared? No. They have to be trussed up because they struggle. There are wounds, and some of them die as a result. So don't wear wool, either.

Polyester? Who knows. But would you want to be a fish living in a river that gets the factory runoff, or a bird flying though the exhaust?

Yes....all excellent points!!! Wool really makes me sad...I know many of the sheep suffer so many cuts and it is heartbreaking! You brought up an excellent point about cotton as well!!! Thanks so much for your comments!

Excellent article theherbivorehippi. The onus is clearly on the users. I don't believe that these people are naive enough not to know where their furs come from. They are aware but not alive to the horrors of animal slaughter. China is a country that rolls its tanks over student protesters. So, I don't expect anything better from these people. But to see that the same malaise thrives with impunity in the better informed and more aware Western world is sad indeed.

Thank you for reading! I remember when I first saw photos when I was investigating this of the crates stuffed full of pets and you could literally see the collars on half the dogs. The open markets there I know sell a ton of animals as well with no thought to where the animal is going. everything about fur market is so terribly wrong.

I agree whole heartedly with your animal abuse story. There is more to it: people abuse other people with little of no restraint. I recognize where one species may kill another for nutrition needs, but killing to satisfy greed is another. Makes me wonder if God thinks he made a mistake in creating homo sapiens.

Thank you so much for your comment! I agree 100%. It's so disturbing how humans feel they can just destroy something that isn't theirs to begin with for absolutely no reason!

I agree with everything except for the person who lumps all Chinese people together and refers to them as "these people". The average Chinese man, woman or child is not one of these monsters. They would not condone any of that cruelty. Someone actually used an act by the political communists who most Chinese are victims of themselves as an example. Shame on you who do that. My husband is Chinese and neither he nor anyone he knows in China would react any different that the rest of us who are horrified by what this author has showed us. It is not the Chinese Society nor the average person that is responsible for this torture. We here in America have pets stolen every day for nefarious reasons also. People need to be educated worldwide.

I abhor the fur trade!! How can a human do such things to another creature? Herbi, when you and I get rich, we'll buy that island together!

So many people think it's okay to wear ranch-raised fur because the animals weren't trapped. DUH! The trapped animals actually suffered less, in all probability. But I think stell leghold traps should be banned, too, along with the cruel and disgusting fur farms!

REAL PEOPLE WEAR FAKE FUR!!

Honor- I do hope that you don't feel that I am attacking the Chinese race in any way writing this hub. although this problem of the pets being stolen is stemming from China...there is every race I'm sure that are purchasing and participating in this disgusting market. I do know what comment you are referring to though and I apologize that you were offended.

Habee-I will hold you to that! lol. When I am rich you are going to have to move to my private animal island and help out!!

Thank you both for reading!

Truly dreadful. By bot shying away from showing the images the message is more powerful. This needs to be stopped. It is the 21st century and some parts of the world still act as if they were cavemen and women. Thanks for highlighting. I shall link up as promised.

Thanks for coming and reading. Yes, the images definitely speak for themselves. This was one of my first hubs when I joined hubpages. I had this information as a lens over at Squidoo and I just received so much hate mail that the pictures were not "necessary" and it was too judgmental. Hmmmmmm....truth is disturbing.

Yeah, it seems totally useless to me. All this killing for something that has no real value. Long ago there were few choices for keeping warm, but that's not the case now.

Interesting aside though...there is at least one human who thinks wearing human skin is acceptable (maybe more). I believe it was Jeffery Dahmer or some other serial killer.

theherbivorehippi profile image

theherbivorehippi Hub Author 24 months ago

You are so right! In ancient times there weren't options but now there are alternatives to everything. There is no reason to farm and kill animals for their fur or skin and these people that are stealing pets? I mean, my pets are my children..I would like to see someone try to steal my dogs. Not a chance!

When we start thinking animals are human it's not very long before we think humans are animals. Millions of animals are served up on dinner tables every day. If you have a bleeding heart worry about Iraq and Afganistan.

theherbivorehippi profile image

theherbivorehippi Hub Author 23 months ago

Well I do have a bleeding heart...for animals not people. Animals are innocent creatures that don't deserve the torture and the lives that humans inflict on them. Humans are to blame for corruption in the world. And yes..millions of animals are served up on dinner tables every day...shame on people for doing so! Animals are not ours to farm, eat, torture, kill or use for entertainment. And no...animals are not humans...they are better than us.

"Bless the beasts and the children for in this world they have no voice, they have no choice." How many animals have been slaughtered since that song was written so many years ago. What is the need to wear the carcass of some poor creature just to make yourself look better. If human skin were suddenly in, would some folks pay exorbant fees to wear the flesh of some misfortunate child, tanned and made into a sleek, form fitting blouse. I am afraid there are some who would. Tragic but educational hub, for those who only thin fur themselves and care little about others.~~~MFB III

It is horrible that someone would skin the poor creatures just for their skin. People should go to the store and buy the fur so that those creatures don't have to suffer. :'(

Also, if you do have to skin them, at least don't kill them, that would be just plain mean.

Just goes to show that there are many demented people on this planet. Which is why we have to keep fighting for animal rights. Otherwise nothing will change. Thanks for making this hub.

True that Tranquilheart, People are so demented and animals aren't so we should just give the planet back to them and leave them and it alone and animals should have more rights than the stupid people which kill and eat and murder them
